Hot Toddy
Whiskey, honey, lemon and hot water. The one rule is that the water should be hot, not boiling. Boiling water scalds the honey, drives off the whiskey's aromatics, and makes the lemon taste cooked.
Tips
- Let the kettle sit a minute after it boils. Around 175°F is right.
- Stud the lemon wheel with cloves if you want the spice without loose bits in the drink.
- A peaty scotch makes a smoky version that's a different drink and worth trying once.
Ingredients
Make these first
Method
-
Put the honey in the bottom of a heatproof mug and add a splash of the hot water. Stir until it dissolves. Honey added later just sits at the bottom.
-
Add the lemon juice and the whiskey.
-
Top with the rest of the hot water.
-
Lemon wheel, and the spices if you're using them.
If it's not right
| What you see | Why | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Harsh | water too hot, or not enough honey. | |
| Watery | too much water. It should taste like a drink, not tea. | |
| Honey at the bottom | it went in after the liquid instead of being dissolved first. |
