Vodka Press

A press is half club soda and half lemon-lime soda, and it's the most underrated highball there is. Lighter than a vodka soda, less sweet than a vodka lemonade, and it disappears in the best way on a hot afternoon.

The name comes from Presbyterian, the older whiskey version with ginger ale.

Tips

  • Half and half is the starting point. More club soda makes it drier, more lemon-lime makes it a long vodka lemonade.
  • Tito's is the everyday pour here. A vodka you'd sip neat is wasted in it.
  • Whiskey and ginger ale instead of vodka and lemon-lime is a Presbyterian, and it's worth knowing.
  • Blanco tequila makes a tequila press, which is ranch water territory with a sweeter edge from the lemon-lime. If you want it to be ranch water, drop the lemon-lime soda and use Topo Chico.

Make these first

Method

  1. Fill a highball glass with ice, right to the top. A full glass melts slower than a half-empty one.

  2. Pour the vodka over the ice.

  3. Add the club soda and the lemon-lime soda together.

  4. Squeeze the lime wedge in and drop it.

  5. One gentle stir, no more. Stirring hard knocks the bubbles out.

If it's not right

What you seeWhyWhat to do
Flat poured too hard, stirred too much, or the ice wasn't cold enough to start.
Too sweet shift the ratio toward club soda.
Weak the ice melted before you drank it. Fill the glass properly next time.
