The first one
I shot and edited the first brew video for this site. It was fun, it was hard, and it was stranger than I expected.
The first one
I shot and edited the first brew video for this site. A Chemex, 800 grams, the big weekend batch I make for nobody but me.
It was fun. It was harder than it looked. And it was different from anything else I put out into the world.
I build other things. Some of them are about what I love, and sharing that is easy, because the enthusiasm does the work. Some of them are about what I care enough to fix, and that has its own momentum. Either way, there's a layer between me and the thing. The work is the subject.
This site isn't like that. This one is personal in a way the others aren't. It's my kitchen, my hands, my scale, the grinder set where I set it because I tasted it both ways. Putting that on camera is the most intimate look at me there is, and I found it strange to do.
Not bad strange. Just unfamiliar. There's a difference between telling someone how you cook and showing them, and I didn't feel it until the camera was pointed at the counter.
So: glad to have done it. Glad to share it. A little scared of all of it, which I suspect is the right reaction and not a reason to stop.
There will be more of them. They'll get better, because the first one always makes the second one easier. I can already list what I'd do differently. But this one is where it went from being a site I write to a thing I'm actually in.
